Were 1930s a decade of depression? [audio 5min @9:11]

Professor Chris Wrigley at the University of Nottingham answered a "Making History" listener's query about a family member moving from South Wales to Loughborough to find work by arguing that not all the UK suffered economic depression in the 1930s. Indeed there were pockets of prosperity in the manufacturing areas of the Midlands and South East that were not dependent on exports but rather met domestic demand for cars and electrical goods in particular.
