Queen Elizabeth went to Westminster Wednesday morning for the State opening of Parliament. She went there as only the 6th woman in British history to have been crowned and anointed Queen. Traditionally, society has treated men as the natural rulers, but 6 women in history have reigned in Britain in their own right. How did these 6 manage to confront the sceptics and balance society’s traditional roles for women -- of wife and mother, with the responsibilities of a monarch?
