The Last Imperial Reign [audio 15min]

"Empire" 80th of 90: Edward VII died in 1910. He was succeeded by his second son who became George V. He was the first monarch to have regularly been to his empire, and he combined his practical understanding of what was going on in the colonies with the constitutional theory and change that marked more than a quarter of a century of his reign. But on George's coronation (1911), Britain already knew that, in the coming war, she would survive only with help from the empire. "This Sceptred Isle: Empire" is a narrative history of the British Empire from Ireland in the 12th century to the independence of India in the 20th, told in 90 programmes written by historian Christopher Lee and narrated by actor Juliet Stevenson. ~Visit website to listen again to 5 most recent episodes, plus interactive maps and timeline, biographical dictionary, image galleries, quizzes, sources, resources, listeners' comments.
