Sean Street tells the story of the tragedy through the memories of residents, including two survivors who still live on the San Andreas Fault, and through eye witness accounts -- such as those left by the opera singer Enrico Caruso and the novelist Jack London. Given that the issue is not if, but when, another earthquake happens, he meets historians and writers who are trying to learn the lessons of one of America's greatest urban disasters.
