Corazon 'Cory' Aquino's People's Revolution [30min]

Over four days in 1986, the Philippine people brought down a dictatorship and restored democracy. They braved tanks and armed forces to overthrow the dictator, Ferdinand Marcos, who was replaced by Corazon Aquino, the housewife turned politician (as she called herself). This programme traces the historic events up to and after the revolution and the impact of people power on the Philippines over the past two decades. Why did over a million Filipinos feel motivated to risk their lives and march on Manila? Rosie Goldsmith interviews key players including Corazon Aquino; Fidel Ramos -- later President Ramos -- who led the coup to oust Marcos; and Imee Marcos, the dictator's elder daughter. You'll also hear about the role of the Catholic church, why the USA gave up on its loyal ally, and how a radio station helped topple the old regime. There's also exciting new archive material from this period. Rosie also reflects on the events since 1986, including several dangerous coups, and the second People Power Revolution in 2001, which overthrew President Joseph Estrada.
