Thucydides' Continuing Relevance [11min @30:17]

Paul Cartledge, Professor of Greek History at Cambridge, joins a 45min roundtable discussion on alternative medicine, human enhancement and life extension, and an end to world poverty, to discuss how, despite being written over two thousand years ago, Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian Wars discusses war, newspeak and class hatred, terrorism, revolution and genocide. So are there universal themes in war and is it inevitable that history will repeat itself? Prof Cartledge will be taking part in a debate following a performance of The War That Still Goes On at the Novello Theatre, Aldwych [London], on Sunday 12 February at 5.30pm."Start the Week" sets the cultural agenda every Monday. Guests are drawn from the top movers and shakers in politics, history, science and the arts. Host Andrew Marr also welcomes MP Clare Short, Cambridge scientist Dr Aubrey de Grey, and physicist Kathy Sykes.
