Sea Bathing in 18c Brighton [15min]

"Looking Out to Sea" is the story of the 18th-century Brighton 'dipper' Martha Gunn, in the first of five original stories celebrating the life of an important woman in Brighton's history. Presented by Lynne Truss. By Carole Hayman, read by Judy Cornwell. Directed by Celia de Wolff. According to Wikipedia, "Dippers or guides were used with the bathing machines and they escorted visitors into the water. Some of the dippers became quite famous with Martha Gunn and Old Smoaker of Brighton both having worked for the Prince Regent. The role of the dipper was to ensure that the guest had enough dips with three immersions being the preferred treatment."
