More than seven million women served their country during the second world war, either in the armed services or on the home front. Betty Boothroyd, former Speaker of the House of Commons, tells their story with first hand accounts from those who were conscripted to work in the uniformed services, on the land, in hospitals and factories and in a variety of voluntary organisations.
