I am an Assistant Professor in the History Department at North Park University--a small liberal arts university on the north side of the city of Chicago. I would like to begin a public posting site on HNN, choosing you because you gave the History Department at Tulane a web site for communication.

We would like to offer a semester (or a year) in Chicago for a student in the gulf area displaced by Katrina. We would help with transportation, lodging, food--and even tuition and expenses, depending upon our fundraising capability. We live on the North side, and virtually every Chicago university is accessible by train. We would provide the student a room in our home, and assist them with getting settled in Chicago. They could take classes at North Park...or any Chicago-area university.

My hope is that if we start this, university professors all over the United States might join in. We want to create a supporting community for college students whose intellectual communities have been ripped from them.
