Cliopatria Welcomes David Carlton

Cliopatria is pleased to welcome David Carlton to its circle. The child of a South Carolina mill town, Dr. Carlton did his undergraduate work at Amherst and his graduate study at Yale. After brief teaching appointments at Texas Tech and Coastal Carolina University, he joined the faculty at Vanderbilt University in 1983. Professor Carlton is the author of Mill and Town in South Carolina, 1880-1920 and the editor of Selected Historical Documents to Accompany America's History, Vol. 1: to 1877 and (with Peter Cochlanis) of Confronting Southern Poverty in the Great Depression: The Report on Economic Conditions of the South and Supplementary Documents and The South, the Nation, and the World: Perspectives on Southern Economic Development. His articles appear in the Journal of American History, the Journal of Economic History, the Journal of Urban History, Southern Cultures, and elsewhere; his essays are in many anthologies and encyclopedias. Dr. Carlton is active in a number of professional organizations, having served as President of the St. George Tucker Society and on committees of the Economic History Association, The Historical Society, and the Southern Historical Association. It's a pleasure to welcome him to Cliopatria.
