From Jane Eyre to Jennifer Wilbanks

I had wanted at all costs to avoid comment on the Jennifer Wilbanks "cold feet at the wedding" story, but this insightful column on it by Anne Applebaum provides one of the few satisfying explanations for why people find it worth discussing. Ulterior motives aside (and there are plenty of those), Applebaum argues that the story offers us a way of airing out our culture's schizophrenic attitudes toward the phenomenon of the over-elaborate wedding. Whether it's the right way is, I suppose, another matter.

I see that Derek Catsam at Rebunk is offering a dollar for a satisfying explanation on this topic. How to divide it up? Does the blogger get a cut for the insights of those whom he blogs?
