Half century old casino in Vegas hit by fire (Moulin Rouge, the first integrated casino)

LAS VEGAS -- Last week it appeared the Moulin Rouge hotel would be getting a new lease on life. Now, progress at the historic Las Vegas property has taken a monumental step backwards.

A devastating four-alarm fire tore through the building Wednesday afternoon, sending clouds of smoke billowing into the skies just north of downtown Las Vegas....

The Moulin Rouge Development Corp. recently reached a deal with Washington-based Republic Urban Properties to renovate the 54-year-old site. The plan called for a new 700-room hotel, casino, concert venue and jazz center.

Music played an integral role in the hotel’s brief but groundbreaking run. When it opened in May 1955, Moulin Rouge was the first integrated casino in Las Vegas and played host to famous black entertainers that included Sammy Davis Jr., Nat King Cole and Louis Armstrong.
