USM: The Preemptive Strike Has Failed
The preemptive strike has failed. The USM Faculty Senate has passed its gut check.
This evening, on a vote of 39 to 2, the Senate approved a resolution calling on the Mississippi IHL Board to start a search for the next President of the University of Southern Mississippi.
The Senate avoided the phrase"no confidence," and asked for Thames' replacement to take office in May 2006, when his four-year term expires.
In point of fact, Thames' catastrophic record as a manager warrants his immediate removal. With a proven reputation for vindictiveness, he is going to do further damage through reprisals if he becomes a lame duck.
But the message cannot be spun or misunderstood. It's up to the Board whether USM survives as a national university--very possibly, whether it survives at all.
What are you going to do now, Roy Klumb?
