Hmm, I see there's lots of heated discussion I need to catch up on below. That'll keep til Monday. Right now I'm going to celebrate the aforementioned holiday by putting on that new live 3-CD set....
One difference between the two is that Spacey does all his own singing, whereas Jamie Foxx is lip-synching to actual Ray Charles tracks.
Funny... I've been on such a Sinatra kick recently. A friend copied Sinatra at the Sands for me, and I can't stop playing it! That version of "I've Got You Under My Skin" is just as good as music gets.
If I can like both Sinatra and Rush, anyone can do anything they want.
I will grant you The Rain Song, if only because it happens to be not only my favorite Zep song, but one of my favorite pieces of rock period. But he's still too sloppy. ;)
And as for the other, well I don't want to be known as a one-note Charlie when it comes to Rush. And Rush, BNL, and the Hip are among my favorite bands, period.
I heard that he seems to master Darin's rhythmic sense and does a good job... but I'm wondering how much of it is "impersonation." I've not seen "Ray" either, but heard similarly good things about Foxx---that he "inhabits" the role.
As for you v. Spacey ... I ain't touchin' that. hehehee
Spacey is _terrific_, actually. Some film critic said he is _better_ than Darin -- I'll let that go, but he's definitely very good. The guy deserves a medal - he produced the film, wrote it, directed it, sings and dances in it, and acts in in. My wife wants to leave me for him.

... oh, and I did a couple of weeks' worth of tribute to Sinatra on my "Not a Blog" starting on Ol' Blue Eyes' birthday: December 12th. :)
Haven't seen "Beyond the Sea" yet, but am looking forward to it---even if it's not DARIN doing the singing. Was Spacey okay, John? I saw him perform---but if Darin was no Sinatra, Spacey is no Darrin. :)
You're right, Aeon, good, but no Sinatra. But still very good and entertaining.
And isn't this ironic. Just yesterday, "Mack the Knife" was my "Song of the Day." Check out the Darrin links in that little paragraph tribute to the song.
Don't you bait me, Steve! Page isn't sloppy, except when he wants to be. Listen to his playing in, say, The Rain Song, or Since I've Been Loving You, or Heartbreaker, or Achilles' Last Stand. Whoops, I let you bait me after all... :-)
But what's with calling Rush one of your favorite _Canadian_ bands? What's the implication of the qualifier?
John, you imply that I violate the law of non-contradiction by liking both Jimmy Page and Bobby Darin. Not so! In any case, Darin is good, but he's no Sinatra.
Yeah, yeah, Page wrote some great riffs, but I wouldn't recommend watching him to learn the craft. He was brilliant but sloppy, you know?
Good rock alert: the Canadian Broadcasting Corp is doing an all-star tsunami fundraiser this Thursday that includes 4 of my favorite Canadian bands: Rush, Barenaked Ladies, The Tragically Hip (at least Gord Downie anyway), and the highly underrated Blue Rodeo. If you get CBC or have satellite, that's Thursday evening at 7pm EST. (730 in Newfoundland ;) )
Folks - Don't let Aeon fool you. He went to the movies recently and saw "Beyond The Sea" about Bobby Darin, and, well, he loved it. I too must confess that my wife and I recently saw it and loved it too. Bobby Darin Rules!! Jimmy Page? Well, matters of taste, blah blah blah...
