Noted Here and There ...
Tom Palaima, one of Cliopatria's Contributing Editors, writes of How the Pentagon Is Betraying the Troops."
The conclusion of Peter Charles Hoffer's book, Past Imperfect: Facts, Fictions, Frauds - American History From Bancroft And Parkman To Ambrose, Bellisles, Ellis, And Goodwin, will give you a taste of just how severe Hoffer's criticism of us is. I'll be reviewing the book for Christian Century and HNN, so I reserve further comment here, except to note that, because recent scandals have focused largely on American historians, Hoffer concentrates on the practice of American history. I am hearing some suggestions that greater attention needs to be given to the practice of history in non-American fields.
At Early Modern Notes, Sharon Howard has a rich collection of web resources on the"Glorious Revolution, 1688-9." I'm still not clear how the Brits appropriated that"glorious" claim, but some revolutions have worked out better than others, I grant you.
I also want to re-emphasize the importance of posts and comments at both Chapati Mystery and Early Modern Notes about the use of blogs in history classes. Do take advantage of the expertise of George Mason University's Paula Petrik who also comments at Early Modern Notes and of Sepoy at Chapati Mystery to inform yourselves. The Revolution, History 101, and just about everything I can think of will be blogged.
Finally, our HNN neighbor, Judith Klinghoffer, calls our attention to the Women's Page at Persian Journal, which features the work of Pouya, an Iranian artist. She has created quite moving"flashes," which you can see and hear on domestic violence (with a translation here) and child labor, with special attention to Iran. Congratulations to Edith, also, for a prized and well-earned link from Andrew Sullivan.
