And we do need to be deeply concerned, both for our own sake and for the sake of people in poorer countries who are more likely to be victims.
I will point out something hopeful, however. The SARS epidemic marked one of the first times that an epidemic was identified and contained within a few months of its emergence. If the Chinese had been a little more forthcoming, the success would have been far greater.
Now we are planning for an epidemic that has not really started. That's pretty amazing and a reason for cautious hope.
