Dec 7, 2004Hold On! I thought Outsourcing was Stealing Americans' Jobs
The Associated Press reports that hospitals are increasingly turning to radiologists in India when people need CT scans analyzed overnight. Is this taking jobs from higher-paid Americans? No! There's"a shortage of U.S. radiologists." There aren't enough to pull overnight shifts. And the hospitals pay the Indians just as much as they pay Americans. So much for the scare that outsourcing professional jobs is going to bring down the middle class.

But the "threat" from foreign radiologists was specifically named by Paul Craig Roberts and Sen. Charles Schumer in their warning about outsourcing.

This doesn't sound like the typical outsourcing scenario. In most cases, outsourcing is motivated by lower costs in the outsource country; it's very unusual for employees in India to have salary parity with those in the US.
I'm not offering an argument against outsourcing, but presenting the radiology situation as if it were a typical case is inaccurate.
