The Illinois GOP is run by fools who spurned a sitting senator ( Fitzgerald) for getting an honest U.S. Attorney-General appointed ( who is investigating Daley machine-GOP machine corruption) and then spurned the runner-up on the primary ( Oberweis) to handpick Alan Keyes.
Why ? Are they anti-abortion zealots like Ambassador Keyes ? No, the Illinois GOP leadership is a group of moderates and liberals- George Ryan thought Fidel Castro was a swell guy to visit and that all death row inmates should be pardoned. No, the leadership wanted to maintain ironclad control of what's left of the party at all costs by handpicking a guy so extreme - and arguably a candidate who was not even serious in his extremism - that a loss was a foregone conclusion.
Illinois needs a third party .

I was rather taken aback by Keyes' 27% showing, to be honest. It represents a much larger die-hard base than most analysts I read even conceived of.
