Just A Day Like Any Other Day ...

It's just a day, like any other day, here in the good ol' US of A and Mr. Sun! has some naughty suggestions for your behavior at the polls.

It's just a day, like any other day, here in the good ol' US of A and Romenesko has a sample of the best political cartoons of the season from around the country.

It's just a day, like any other day, here in the good ol' US of A and Caleb McDaniel at Mode for Caleb has a very smart post on how Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie was wrong about how doing history is changed by technological innovation.

It's just a day, like any other day, here in the good ol' US of A, but from Canada Brandon Watson at Siris has been fisking Garry Wills. (For someone who voted for Badnarik for President, Watson is a remarkably intelligent and sane young man.)

It's just a day like any other day, here in the good ol' US of A, and Chris Bray at Histori-blogography posts about academic freedom and freedom from criticism. The latter isn't implicit in the former.

It's just a day, like any other day, here in the good ol' US of A and the Cliopatriarch of Wales tells us what our bickering looks like from abroad. She also recommends: Simon Singh's top 10 history of science books, Paul Johnson on Napoleon, and Jonathan Yardley on George Washington.

Speaking of Washington, we're electing his successor today. Let him be worthy.

It's hard to remember in the heat of battle, but we can never be entirely certain about the long-term good or ill that emerges from our actions. That's particularly true in an election; for we do not control the people we choose, and each new day rolls a new set of dice.

All we can do is make the best choice we can, with what we know and feel, and then face the consequences.

But I will pray with you, Ralph, that whoever wins proves himself worthy.
