Commander in Chief finally 'fesses up

By Associated Press, 8/5/2004 13:48

WASHINGTON (AP) President Bush offered up a new entry for his catalog of ''Bushisms'' on Thursday, declaring that his administration will''never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people.''

Bush misspoke as he delivered a speech at the signing ceremony for a $417 billion defense spending bill.

''Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we,'' Bush said. ''They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we.''

No one in Bush's audience of military brass or Pentagon chiefs reacted.

Arnold,

If you're talking about Bush, then perhaps you were unaware that Scott McClellan did admit that Bush misspoke <a=href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3541706.stm">(see here)</a>:

And I, also, wasn't refusing to see that he misspoke or that its straightforward meaning was wrong and funny.

I'm just annoyed that many people, who have an irrational hatred of the man, choose to view every awkward phrase as hilarious and an indication that he's too stupid to be in office.

Gil,

Some folks' grossly embarassing refusal to admit
even a mispoken word just exacerbates the mistrust many
feel towards their other, well-spoken words.
As far as the Bush is concerned, one has to be totally deprived of sense of humor, not to see it in the phrase
in question.

Well, what Bush probably meant to say was that "we" also never stop thinking about the ways ~terrorists~ can hurt this country, but it came out sounding like both he and terrorists were thinking about ways ~each~ could hurt this country. And that is close to the truth, although in Bush's warped mind I'm sure he thinks ~everything~ he does is good and correct. This is a guy who couldn't think of one mistake he ever made as President.

I think your interpretation of what he meant is wrong. I think it was the mother of all freudian slips. Either that or maybe Dick Cheney is really running things and George is starting to rebel a little.

It's certainly an odd way to say it, but it's not even necessarily a mistake.

There are different ways of "thinking about" something.

Some might think about new ways to harm us in order to actually proceed to do so; while we would be wise to think about ways this might be done also, so that we can try to prevent the harm.
