Feeling a Draft from Obama

Is Obama planning to impose a military draft? He says he won't but statements like this don't inspire too much confidence:

But it’s also important that a president speaks to military service as an obligation not just of some, but of many. You know, I traveled, obviously, a lot over the last 19 months. And if you go to small towns, throughout the Midwest or the Southwest or the South, every town has tons of young people who are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. That’s not always the case in other parts of the country, in more urban centers. And I think it’s important for the president to say, this is an important obligation. If we are going into war, then all of us go, not just some.

Indeed, the Cold War was worse because the draft allowed it to be. The answer is to make the military truly voluntary: Allowing people to quit at will.

Perhaps....though the existence of the draft did nothing to prevent Korea or Vietnam or the near wars over Cuba and elswhere.

Consider the possibility that both a draft and tax increases to pay for war abroad would exercise a restraining influence on political leaders who have recently taken us into at least one war too many and they've been able to do so by allowing American citizens and tax payers to believe that they would not have to serve in or pay for it.

So if he drafts all the liberals from urban areas, will that stop the war?

I shouldn't make light of this. Military slavery is not funny. But black comedy is all we got if we wish to chuckle at politics these days.

It is an outdated link. I fixed it.
