Sunday's Notes

Sam Anderson,"A History of Hooch," New York, 6 July, reviews Iain Gately's Drink: A Cultural History of Alcohol.

Jonathan Yardley reviews Brendan I. Koerner's Now The Hell Will Start: One Soldier's Flight From the Greatest Manhunt of World War II.

Stephanie Zacherek,"A Girl and a Gun," NYT, 13 July, reviews Richard Brody's Everything is Cinema: The Working Life of Jean-Luc Godard.

Finally, Asian History Carnival 20 is up at Jottings from the Granite Studio. My list, 80 History Blogs that I recommend, is criticized by Chris at blog 4 history. Chris ought to keep a couple of things in mind. 1. Contemporary Commentary -- Left, Right, and otherwise -- is standard fare in op-eds by historians and in history blogging. 2. The Contemporary Comment that I recommend is *not* exclusively on the Left. Even if he didn't bother to educate himself by reading, Chris might have -- you know -- taken a clue about Daniel Larison and his blog, Eunomia, from its web address. And my colleagues at Cliopatria will be interested to know that KC Johnson's Durham-in- Wonderland"leans way left." 3) Otherwise, however, Chris's nominees for inclusion on such a list of recommended history blogs are quite good.
