Things Noted Here and There

George Eberhart,"Earliest Printed Books in Select Languages, Part 1: 800-1500 A.D.," Britannica Blog, 30 March. Both printing and movable type were first invented in China, but they flourished in Europe because of the Indo-European languages' limited alphabet. Who knew that the first English language text printed in the UK was Mubashshir ibn Fatik, Abu al-Wafa', Dictes and Notable Wyse Sayenges of the Phylosophers (Westminster, Eng.: William Caxton, 1479)? Hat tip.

Gary Younge,"The Fascist Who ‘Passed' for White," The Guardian, 4 April, reviews Gerald Horne's The Colour of Fascism: Lawrence Dennis, Racial Passing, and the Rise of Right-wing Extremism in the United States.

Liesl Schillinger,"What Kind of Car is a Ford Madox Ford?" NYT, 8 April, reviews Clive James, Cultural Amnesia: Necessary Memories From History and the Arts.

Kevin Boyle,"Ethnic Cleansing, American Style," Washington Post, 8 April, reviews Elliott Jaspin's Buried in the Bitter Waters: The Hidden History of Ethnic Cleansing in America.

Finally, we've just finished a major up-date of Cliopatria's History Blogroll. It lists over 600 history blogs. Among the highlights: 51 ancient and 44 premodern history blogs, 49 blogs that concentrate on regional histories outside the United States, 43 non-English language blogs, and 39 blogs in United States history, 47 military history blogs and 36 blogs that focus on digital history, science and technology.
