Good question, Ralph. My guess is that they were willing to cut the King some slack for all the good PR he gave the Army, and let him grow in anticipation of his "readjustment" to civilian society. I'd have to check Peter Guralnick's outstanding bio to see if there is a tidbit on that. He was discharged in March 1960 and the show aired in May of that year.

Ed, I'm prepared to accept your word for the date. My only question is, if Elvis had just returned from his tour in the army, how could his hair be so long?

This was Elvis's welcome back by Old Blue Eyes after getting out of the Army in 1960, not 1957.
