Blogs Liberty and Power Where's the Veto Pen
Feb 18, 2004Where's the Veto Pen
Me thinks that Bush doth protest too much when it comes to holding the line on government spending? Why? Well since this is a history blog I'd ask the readers what is one of the most unusual parts of the Bush presidency thus far? As Pete DuPont notes in today's Opinion Journal, Bush hasn't vetoed ANYTHING in his first term. That's historically amazing and from a libertarian perspective frightening.
There are growing calls among fiscal conservatives for Bush to veto the 350 billion dollar plus highway bill that is being sorted through the Congress. Failure to do so may completely undercut Bush's credentials as any fan of a smaller government.
