Allan Massie,"Return of the Roman," Prospect, November, reflects on resurgent interest in ancient Rome; and Charles McGrath,"Translating Virgil's Epic Poem of Empire," NYT, 30 October, interviews Robert Fagle, whose new translation of The Aeneid is out this week.

The Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art's virtual exhibit,"Masterpieces of Persian Painting," mostly from the 14th to the 17th centuries CE, is extraordinarily rich. See also: Pruned.

We lost a young historian, Robert Secher, on the front lines in Iraq on 8 October. Dan Ephron and Christian Caryl,"A Centurion's E-Mails," Newsweek, nd, reports his experience through his own words. We lost a distinguished senior historian, Lawrence W. Levine, on 23 October. Farewell to them both. Rest in peace. Thanks to Robert Townsend at AHA Today for the tip.

Levine's long essay on the performance of Shakespeare in America was a revelation to me as a doctoral student. It's an extraordinary discussion of class and art, and it is only one of the many great contributions of the man.
