Even if the wording was wrong, his intent and his message were still clear. It doesn't matter if he cited Khomeini, it does matter that he chose this particular out-of-context quote.
It reminds me of how journalists in Europe dealt with Hitler's book "Mein Kampf" and subsequently with Hitler's choice of words when he was consolidating his rulership. They just neglected it or said most people misinterpret him and he is not that evil, he certainly wouldn't risk a war...
Even if you look at the other examples, I am not convinced, because they are milder in form, but still point to the same result: Israel must vanish.
