R. I. P.

KermitL. Hall, a remarkably productiveAmerican legal and constitutional historian, died yesterday in a drowning incident off Hilton Head, South Carolina. Currently, the president at SUNY, Albany, Hall held senior administrative positions at North Carolina State, Utah State, Ohio State, the University of Tulsa, and the University of Florida prior to that. Thanks to David Garrow and Margaret Soltan for the tips.

Kermit Hall was the dean of the College of Humanities here at Ohio State and I got to know him well, albeit from a mostly professional standpoint, in the mid to late 1990s. He was one of the most efficient and effective administrators I have ever seen; really a model of how the job is done. I was shocked to read this morning that he has passed away.

I am sorry to hear this. I had never met the man, but his scholarship has impressed me ever sense I began studying constitutional history in the late 1980s. He will be missed by many.
