CAST YOUR VOTE: Best Libertarian/Classical Liberal Academic Blog
by Liberty and Power
Shown below are the nominees for Liberty and Power's contest for best libertarian/classical liberal academic blog in four categories:
Best Libertarian/Classical Liberal Group Academic Blog
Best Libertarian/Classical Liberal Individual Academic Blog
Best New Libertarian/Classical Liberal Group Academic Blog
Best New Libertarian/Classical Liberal Individual Academic Blog
Cast your votes in the comments section of this blog post. You can vote one time in each of the categories (for a total of four votes).
If you wish, you can vote for the same blog if it is listed in more than one category. If a blog in any category does not receive a majority of votes cast, the winner will be determined by a runoff.
Write-in votes will be accepted in the first round of voting.
The majority of blog members must be either currently enrolled students or have experience as professors or instructors at universities, colleges, and high schools, or as professional staff at educational, research and public policy institutes and programs. The content of the blog should be generally supportive of free markets, civil liberties, and individual rights.
The first round of the voting will close on December 31 and the results (and details of possible run-offs) will be announced shortly thereafter.
Best Libertarian/Classical Liberal Group Academic Blog. As the sponsor of the poll, Liberty and Power is not eligible to participate in this category. Write in votes allowed.
Best New Libertarian/Classical Liberal Group Academic Blog. The blog, which is also eligible for the best group blog category, must have been founded on or after October 1, 2004. Write in votes allowed.
Best New Libertarian/Classical Liberal Individual Academic Blog. The blog, which is also eligible for the best individual blog category, must have been founded on or after October 1, 2004. Write in votes allowed.
Best Libertarian/Classical Liberal Group Academic Blog: LewRockwell.com Blog (for interesting links to news and commentaries), with Volokh Conspiracy as second choice (primarily for Eugene Volokh's posts on First Amendment issues).
Best Libertarian/Classical Liberal Individual Academic Blog: Austro-Athenian Empire, with Lowercase Liberty as second choice (but please change the background colors, guys).
Best New Libertarian/Classical Liberal Group Academic Blog: Cafe Hayek, with Szasz Blog as second choice.

I hate these polls... because I like so many aspects of the different blogs listed... arrrrrgh (and point well taken, Aeon! :) )
So, I have to approach it this way--If I had a gun to my head ...

Group: Volokh Conspiracy
Individual: Knowledge Problem (Note to Chris and Rod: you guys rock, but it seemed too conflict-of-interest-y. Also, you guys typically cross-post here. So it's KP.)
New Group: Cafe Hayek
New Individual: Theory and Practice
Best group: Mises Blog.
Best individual: Rad Geek.
Roderick T. Long -
12/15/2005
Was this intended as a write-in vote in the category of "group blog" or in the category of "new group blog"? (It seems eligible for either as far as I can tell.)
Roderick T. Long -
12/15/2005
Hmm, I just noticed -- Rad Geek is eligible in the "individual blog" category, but not, I think, in the "new individual blog" category. (The rules say "new" means less than a year old.) Sergio, which category did you intend?

For best individual academic blog, I pick Ken Gregg's CLASSical Liberalism (although some of his competition comes mighty close). He regularly posts what would be a damned fine Wikipedia article on some major libertarian thinker. Ought to consider putting out a collection of those profiles in hard copy sometime.

David means "it should only be individual." Or so I conjecture. :-)

Group academic blog: Positive Liberty
New group academic blog: Positive Liberty
Individual Academic Blog: The Fly Bottle (But is this really an "academic" blog? Just asking.)
New Individual Academic Blog: Theory & Practice (But however much sense the various classical liberal critiques of democracy may make, surely they are strongest when there is only one choice on the ballot. Not that it isn't a desrving choice, but again, just an observation.)

I vote Austro-Athenian Empire for "Best Libertarian/Classical Liberal Individual Academic Blog".
I also humbly submit that these cateogry names are kinda confusing and clunky.
I also find it nighly amusing how much this intellectual beauty contest resembles other line-ups I'm currently participating in while hanging around online.
Ta',
Jeanine

Before I abstain from voting on my own category, and vote on the others, I'm a bit curious to know how Theory & Practice can be both a New Libertarian/Classical Liberal Group Academic Blog and a New Libertarian/Classical Liberal Individual Academic Blog. Irfan's a good writer, but I'm not sure he's good enough to transcend the law of identity...
