David,
Interesting links here. As I was following the comments on this topic, Jason Sorens made a comment on volokh.com about a recent paper which comes to the exact opposite claim.
Discovered from following up on this that Sorens has several recent papers online on secession: Secession and Democracy, "Globalization, Secessionism, and Autonomy", "The Cross-Sectional Determinants of Secessionism in Advanced Democracies," "Secession and Self-Determination" (book review), as well as his online dissertation, The Political Economy of Secessionism: Regional Responses to Globalization.
Looked at the first one, which is good. Will have to read the rest when I get a chance.
Just a thought.
