Lords of the Rings

The Red Sox -- Ooops, I mean, the"World Champion Boston Red Sox" -- raise their championship banner and receive their rings today in the Fens. They happen to be playing some team from New York.

Here is an op-ed in today's Globe.

My guess is that it will get a little dusty in Casa de Catsam this afternoon.

Steve --
i actually quite admire and respect what the Twins have accomplished. Whatever bad taste might be in my mouth from Minnesota, I will always have something of a soft spot for twins and vikings fans.

Quadruple A? You do know that we don't have the Brewers in the AL anymore, right? The Twins will control the AL Central division for the next two to three years I believe, until they move on in their decade cycle of being bad, raising a good farm team, winning for a few seasons, selling everyone to stay afloat, and then going back to being bad. Fortunately our only real rival is the White Sox, and nobody really cares about them anyways, since they're not the Cubs.

Chris --
But we all know that when the dust clears, the odds are pretty good that we'll be looking at a game seven next year between the Idiots and the Empire in either Fenway or the Toilet.

The Central will be up for the taking as always. We really ought to recognize that the Twins have had a nice little run over there in quadruple A, but that anyone has hope in that division.

I'd say that the ChiSox can contend through much of the summer.

Basically the same as last year -- Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Johnny Damon, Trot Nixon, Bill Mueller, Kevin Millar, Jason Varitek, and Mark Bellhorn all return among position players, Schilling, Wakefield, and Arroyo are the returning starters, and most of the bullpen is the same. That, plus new addition,s should let everyone rest easy that whatever pretensions the Blue Jays and Orioles have, by September it will be all about the Sox v. the Yankees.

So, who are their best players now?

Derek Charles Catsam - 4/12/2005

Most actually do not. but in an era of free agency, there will always be guys with contracts up, and no team can sign them all. the Sox had the big five going into last season. they signed Big Papi David Ortiz and they signed Jason Varitek. they did not really even pursue Derek Lowe, and they simply would not match what the Mets were willing to offer Pedro. They traded Nomar midseason, and they ended up trading or otherwise not re-signing who they got for Nomar, largely because they wanted minky to be able to play elsewhere and they thought Renteria was an upgrade over cabrera. I can live with all of that.

Not being a baseball fan (waiting for the stunned silence and murmurs to settle down), why do World Champion (is it really??) teams replace a majority of their teams during the off-season?

Derek Charles Catsam - 4/11/2005

. . . says the guy whose team bought a new pitching staff, second baseman, and first baseman during this offseason

dc.

So how many rings will they actually be handing out since this year's team is a mere shell of last year's squad, around 5 or so?

*yawn*
