How to Use Active Sync with an IPAQ PDA

If you recently bought an IPAQ 6315 and tried to sync it up with your laptop using bluetooth technology you probably found it did not work. I spoke with technicans at T-Mobile (where I got my IPAQ) and at HP and nobody could solve the problem. I searched on the Internet and nobody had a solution. Finally, a techie at HP told me the problem was with Microsoft's new Service Pack 2 software. He told me Microsoft was aware of the problem and was working on it. I then contacted Microsoft and began 2 weeks of discussions with Cristian Moreno. He eventually came up with a solution. It's simple. It takes about 3 minutes.

The main problem people encounter when syncing up their PDA with their laptop is that the ports don't match up. The PDA generates high port incoming numbers (mine: 39) and the activesync on the laptop only lists, by default, a low number of 3 or 4 when you go into File/Connection settings. So the challenge is to get those port settings to match. You will probably have to remake the connection each time you restart your laptop. Be sure to soft reset your PDA, too, when making a fresh connction. Remove the old shortcut on the PDA; it probably won't work a second time. You will probably have to remove the PDA icon from the BT Device Manager, as well and start fresh.

Here's how:

1. Insert the Belkin BT adaptor into the USB port on your laptop.
2. Make sure that Belkin is not listed in the add/remove programs. If it is listed, delete it.
3. On the BT device manager (which you can access either from the task bar or the control panel), (a) add your PDA. (Be sure to turn on your BT on the PDA first.) (b) under Options tab, uncheck the Turn Discovery On radio button and check all the others, (c)
Under com ports tab note your incoming and outgoing ports, (d) the hardware tab should list both the Microsoft BT Enumerator and the Belkin BT adaptor.
4. Go to: START/RUN/devmgmt.msc
5. The Device Manager will pop up. Go to Ports. 3 ports will be listed. Remove the port that is labelled com 3 by rightclicking on it and uninstalling it. Right click on the port listing the incoming Port Number that was listed on BT Devices. Go to Properties. Go to Port Settings and click on the advanced button. Change the com port number to 3. If the system tells you that you already have a port using the number 3 click yes, ok. It doesn't matter. When the system resets you will see two Com 3 ports listed. That's ok.
6. Go to: START/RUN/wcesmgr.exe
7. This will bring up a new active sync on your laptop. (If you already had it open, close it and reopen it from START/RUN/wcesmgr.exe.) Go to File/Connection settings. Make sure the box is checked next to the setting: "Allow serial cable or infrared connection. The com 3 port should be selected.)
8. Now go to the PDA and click on the BT Manager. Go to NEW and click on the Active Sync device. Follow instructions and once your device appears, click on it to establish a connection. Voila!
