About Fred Dews, HNN Book Editor
Fred Dews is an alumnus of George Mason University's graduate history program, where he conducted wide-ranging research on American history, including military history, history and memory, and immigration history. His graduate seminar paper on War of 1812 veterans and why Congress failed to grant them bounty land until after the Mexican War won the Josephine Pacheco Award for best graduate history paper in 2003. Fred's history M.A. and master's degree in public policy from Georgetown University help him apply historical knowledge to understanding contemporary political and social problems. He is also a practicing family historian and serves as website editor for the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. He and his wife live in Reston, Virginia.
