Michelangelo's David set for move

Michelangelo’s David is set to be moved from Florence’s city centre because it attracts too many tourists.

The marble statue, which was carved by Michelangelo in 1504, is currently on display in the Accademia gallery, just a few paces from Florence’s Duomo.

However, the city’s head of culture, Paolo Cocchi, has written to the Italian culture minister, Francesco Rutelli, for permission to move it.

The council wants the statue to be placed in a new concert hall being built at Stazione Leopolda, outside the centre and on the edge of the city’s ring road.
