Ivy League Cancels Basketball Tournaments Amid Coronavirus Concerns
The Ivy League canceled its men’s and women’s postseason basketball tournaments in response to concerns about the coronavirus outbreak, the league announced Tuesday, becoming the first Division I conference to take that dramatic step. The league’s regular season champions, the Yale men and Princeton women, will receive automatic berths into the NCAA tournaments.
Other Division I conferences have announced increased safety measures as March Madness ramps up but have vowed that the games will go on; some Division I conferences have already completed their postseason basketball tournaments while many of the bigger events have yet to begin.
The NCAA, which continues to prepare for its signature men’s and women’s tournaments, made clear that its recommendations have not changed, despite the Ivy League’s decision.
