A Jewish historian known for his outspoken views on the way in which Austria addresses its Nazi past was on Friday released from Austrian prison after serving eight months for fraud, the Jewish Telegraph Agency reports.

Stephan Templ has said that his conviction –for allegedly omitting the name of an estranged aunt in an application on behalf of his mother for the return of property seized by the Nazis – was revenge for his vocal criticism.

He announced that he was immediately moving to the Czech Republic in protest of his conviction. “I don’t want to live in a place that stole my freedom for no legitimate reason,” he told JTA.

Templ also told JTA that he intends to use new evidence to try and have his conviction annulled. This evidence shows he repeatedly mentioned the aunt in documents related to the case and given to authorities. Authorities confirmed that at least six applications had named the aunt.

“It was a fabricated trial with trumped-up charges, full of lies,” Templ said. ...
