Former Phillips Exeter Academy professor admits sexual misconduct, sanctioned a second time

Decades old incidents of sexual misconduct by a distinguished Phillips Exeter Academy professor were made public this week when a letter was sent from Principal Lisa MacFarlane to academy alumni.

Richard Schubart, a former history professor and Phillips Exeter Academy faculty emeritus member, was stripped of his status and banned from campus based on incidents involving sexual relationships with students in the 1970s and 1980s, MacFarlane wrote.

The letter was apparently prompted by Boston Globe inquiries after one victim came forward.

Schubart was forced to resign and move off-campus in 2011, but was only recently stripped of his emeritus title and banned from campus and campus activities.

Academy faculty learned of the incidents in 2011 and 2015, according to MacFarlane, and reported them to the “appropriate authorities.”

In both cases, Schubart admitted to sexual misconduct, MacFarlane said. ...
