University of North Dakota drops Indian nickname

Fighting Hawks will be UND’s new athletic nickname.

The results of a vote released at a press conference Wednesday show of 27,378 total votes, Fighting Hawks received 57.24 percent, beating out Roughriders, which received the remaining 42.76 percent.

The winning name is the result of more than a year of work by committees and three public votes.
