Al Barron Reinstated As Monroe Public Schools Teacher

Veteran Monroe Middle School teacher Alan Barron, who was suspended while the district investigated his teaching methods on African-American history, was reinstated and back in the classroom today.

“I have no words that can express my gratitude and thanks for the support you have shown toward me during this turbulent time of my career,” Mr. Barron said on his Facebook page. “Each day I preach to my students far more than history. I preach about choices, commitment and community service as I try to practice what I teach.”

The news of Mr. Barron’s paid administrative leave was met with outrage by hundreds in the community and even nationally who showed their support to the teacher through social media. Mr. Barron is retiring at the end of this year after 36 years with the district.

But in a recorded message sent to district employees Sunday night, Monroe Public Schools Supt. Dr. Barry Martin said the information that was reported was incorrect and that the district was not opposed to Mr. Barron’s teaching methods.
