EUROPE&ARAB LEAGUE SAY NO TO DARFUR; AMERICANS SAY YES

"NATO Secretary Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said the international alliance would continue to support African Union troops on the ground in Darfur, but would not contribute forces." They may be afraid that the Arabs would not like it. The Arab League supports Sudan. Indeed, it wants the forces of the African Union to police Darfur and it wants Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashirhe to be the president of the African Union. After all, wasn't Ide Amin' the head of Organisation for African Unity?

So, how about our so called isolationist Americans? They believe in noblesse oblige.

More broadly, the poll found that 62 percent agree that the United States “has a responsibility to help stop the killing in the Darfur region” and that 58 percent believe “more can be done” by the US “to help end the crisis in Sudan.”

It seems that PEW's generic questions mean less than Andrew Kohut assumes. He writes:

The number of Pew respondents agreeing that the United States should mind its own business and let other countries get along as best they can climbed to 42 percent last year from 34 percent in 2004.
