Are the Irish about to whitewash the anniversary of the Easter Uprising?

Ireland is preparing to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Easter Uprising.  But not everybody's happy with how the government is approaching the task.

In an op ed in the Irish Independent Barbara Scully writes that a promotional video only briefly mentions the uprising:

There is a quick shot of the GPO, the tricolour appears but otherwise it seems top heavy with Queen Elizabeth, British politicians and Ian Paisley. I am all for reconciliation and am a big fan of peace but I am not one bit in favour of rewriting our history.

One of the tag lines that flash across the screen in this video is "let's build a new legacy".

Am I thick but how can you do that? Is that not a contradiction in terms? Anyway what is wrong with the legacy of 1916? Although the vision for Ireland as laid out in the Proclamation is something we have yet to achieve, it is a vision that strikes me as beautiful in its simplicity and egalitarian in its aspirations.

"We declare the right of the people of Ireland to the ownership of Ireland, and to the unfettered control of Irish destinies, to be sovereign and indefeasible."

These words are as relevant today as they were in 1916. Perhaps the reason the Government wants us to 'build a new legacy' is because they and their predecessors have failed so spectacularly particularly in relation this particular vision.
