David Valaik, emeritus professor at Canisius College, dies at 74
David Valaik, PhD, an emeritus professor of history at Canisius College, died on Friday, June 4. He was 74.
Valaik retired from Canisius in 2004, following 44 years of service to the college. During his tenure, he taught a variety of courses including those on the Progressive Era, military history, the Civil War and Theodore Roosevelt. He also served as dean of continuing studies at Canisius College, for a period of time, and directed the Canisius College ROTC Band.
Valaik was considered one of Western New York’s foremost authorities on Theodore Roosevelt’s life and times. He authored numerous scholarly articles about the late president and a book, entitled “Theodore Roosevelt: An American Hero in Caricature.” A longtime member of the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site Board of Trustees, the organization recognized Valaik’s contributions in 1992 when it presented him with its President’s Award.
